  47. This really isn't all that uncommon. Most businesses wait until they
  48. receive notification from the bank that a deposit was made for $X.
  49. They then process a credit memo for your credit card, which has to
  50. be processed by the credit card company, so it can take upwards of
  51. two months before a credit is realized. Not ideal, by any means,
  52. but not uncommon or completely unacceptable either.

  55. I purchased an AR-2500 from ACE, the only complaint I have is that I
  56. asked for a schematic for modification purposes, and I received a
  57. hand-drawn schematic which was very difficult, if not impossible in
  58. places, to read.
  59.  
  60. The scanner itself, internally, seemed rather cheesy, but then again,
  61. there really isn't alot to scanners, is there? The first question that
  62. I, and other friends who saw the unit, asked ourselves was "is this
  63. thing really *worth* $450?" Since I've never opened a Bearcat or
  64. Uniden, I really have nothing to compare it to.
  65.  
  66. Overall, the unit works just fine, and I have no complaints with
  67. performance. From that perspective, I would say that indeed, yes,
  68. the unit is "worth" $450, since it performs as expected, and I was
  69. willing to pay $450 for that level of performance.
  70.  
  71. Would I purchase another unit from ACE? I would have to say yes.
  72. Would I purchase the same unit? Probably.

  113. As  next weekend is Central Coast Field Day at  Wyong,  please 
  114. note  that the usual Sunday morning broadcast will go  out  at 
  115. the same time a day earlier on the Saturday...
  116.  
  117. Repeat,  the  morning  broadcast will take place at 0030UT  on 
  118. Saturday 26th February.

  120. Of  course,  this  is so ANARTS relay officers can go  to  the 
  121. Field Day along with the rest of the East Coast amateurs. Look 
  122. for us there, and say hello.

  124. Back to normal the following Sunday ...

  128. Change in 80m broadcast relay
  129. -----------------------------
  130. Due  to very poor propagation in this part of the cycle during 
  131. summer  months,  it has been decided to drop the 80m relay  of 
  132. the  cast  from December to March inclusive.  The  relay  will 
  133. resume  on  the first Sunday in April,  which is the 3rd  this 
  134. year.
  135.  
  136. This could be reviewed in future years, but should be in force 
  137. until  at  least 1997,  judging by the way the  current  solar 
  138. cycle  is progressing.  The minimum for the cycle is estimated 
  139. variously  to come from late 1995 to around April  1996.  This 
  140. presumes  that  the cycle length will continue to  shorten  to 
  141. under 10 years,  the last cycle being 9.6 years in length. The 
  142. decline of the present cycle is running three to eight  months 
  143. ahead  of cycles 18,  19,  and 21 (cycle 20 was of much  lower 
  144. amplitude).  
  145.  
  146. Something  good  to remember -- the present cycle  (cycle  22) 
  147. reached its maximum in the record short interval of 2.8 years.
  148. Perhaps this next one will be similar.

  243. Solar  activity was mostly very low except for 13th  and  17th 
  244. February when activity was low. 
  245.  
  246. The  geomagnetic field at Learmonth (WA) from 11th to 15th was 
  247. mostly  unsettled  to active with storm levels at  periods  on 
  248. 11th,  and  minor  storm  levels at times  on  the  12th-15th. 
  249. Conditions  on  16th were unsettled to active,  and  quiet  to 
  250. unsettled on 17th. 
  251.  
  252. Ionospheric  F2  critical  frequencies  at  Sydney  were  near 
  253. predicted levels 11th to partway through 13th when frequencies 
  254. were firstly enhanced by up to 40 per cent,  then depressed by 
  255. up  to 30 per cent after 1700UT.  Frequencies on 14th to  15th 
  256. ranged  from  near  normal  to up to  60  per  cent  enhanced, 
  257. returning to near predicted values on 16th,  then up to 15 per 
  258. cent enhanced on 17th February.  There was Sporadic E blanket-
  259. ing at 0800UT on 11th and some spread F during local night  on 
  260. 16th.

  266. Geomagnetic:  Active 20-23 February due to a coronal hole.

  434. I'd expect this will come under the "vanity call sign" program ... if and
  435. when it occurs ... and will require FCC 610V.

  437. I doubt that they (the Government) will reissue old calls if they can be sold
  438. thru the vanity program (sure don't like that name!!!).

  453. A few years ago, at a cross-country ski center, I saw an employee with a 
  454. handheld radio attached to his chest with some sort of harness.  It held 
  455. the radio at a diagonal angle such that the antenna (VHF duck) pointed at 
  456. his left shoulder and the base of the radio pointed at the right side of 
  457. his waist.
  458.  
  459. The harness seemed to be made out of neoprene or nylon and was black in
  460. color.  I want one.  It would be terrific for cross-country skiing, 
  461. because if you fall, you don't fall on your radio.  Even if you
  462. don't fall, it makes the radio easier to use because you can simply
  463. press the ptt switch without removing the radio from the harness.

  556. accepted for aviation use, and the TH-78A is not.  It's against FCC
  557. regulations to use the TH-78A to transmit in the aircraft band.  If I
  558. had one along in an airplane and there was an emergency requiring its
  559. use, then I'd use it, but I wouldn't expect the FCC to be pleased.
